Decorating for the holidays consists of both overt and subtle moves. On the surface you’ll want to use all of the normal holiday specific decorations, banners, trees, candles, wreaths, all dependant on the specific event being celebrated. However there are also deep changes that you can make, to the structure of your social spaces, as well as the positioning of furniture, and the accessories that go with it, in order to create an environment that is open, cozy, and perfect for the season.
Generally you want to use a light hand when undertaking holiday decorating. It’s better to have a few tasteful pieces, than to wash the world in thousands of tiny items, which can become lost, broken, or end up being clutter that you’ll just have to clean up when the season inevitably changes. A few focal accents can do just as much to infuse a space with merry joy, and they’ll be much easier to maintain, store, and retrieve each year.
Furniture is a constant in the home, but when holiday decorating it becomes part of the stage, acting both as a base for your efforts, and as a canvas for your dreams. During winter months people often dress couches with thick fuzzy blankets, and swap out light blinds for heavier curtains to give a room a warmer feel. In the summer lighter textures are better, with bamboo mats, and airy shawls being the best bet for creating a comfy cove at home.
